Running on empty

Wow I woke up this morning just feeling trashed. I had planned to take it pretty easy, maybe do some yoga or something, but man I just sort of shuffled around the house like a zombie at 6am and then lay down on the couch with the cats for a nap and barely dragged my carcass into work.

I don’t know why, I haven’t had any intense workouts in ages. And it’s not like I’ve rapidly upped training volume or anything. I’ve been eating well and sleeping…ok. Around 7 hours most nights. Yesterday I didn’t do anything crazy - had a mellow 40km bike ride with Michael in the morning and a nice 2.6km swim at lunch, plus the slow jog to work and back.

What it might be is just time for a week off. I’ve been pushing hard the last few weekends with long rides and runs and then intense turbo bike and pain in the domain run sessions in the week. Not nearly as much intensity work as I was doing last tri season, but certainly a lot more distance. I know you’re supposed to periodise the training and have every fourth week or so easy for recovery, and I think that’s where my problem lies. I should have taken last week off easy, but kept pushing through because I wanted to have my easy week as the taper week before the Blackmores Half Marathon (ie next week). Probably a silly move, but ah well, we’re there now.

So it’s got to be that, my body is just ready for a rest. Today is a nothing day, just working and eating and early to bed. Mum and Dad and my brother Tim are coming around tonight – my parents just got back from a month in the US and haven’t met our little kitties yet!

So I’m going to push it this weekend with Brick tomorrow and a long bike ride Sunday, but no long running at all this weekend, and I think a bunch of easy days next week so I’m all relaxed and recovered and ready to rumble for the Half Marathon!
