Have I had a shocker?
I got all inspired by the Tour de France and decided to go for a bike ride on Saturday morning. When Dave and Marty said "Should we go down to Akuna Bay and back up the other side?" I said "Sure!"
"Should we do another 10km loop out to Duffys Forest and back?" "Why not?"
Whoops, suddenly I'd knocked over a 90km ride before breakfast!
Not exactly the most conducive thing to tapering, especially one week before the marathon. Also not the best thing for my still tender knees. It's amazing how you know full well you need to relax and taper, you have a whole plan sorted out, and somehow your mind is capable of convincing itself that "a gentle 90km ride doesn't count, it's nothing!" Hmmmm.
Anyway I didn't feel to bad and I tried to keep to easy gears and high cadence so very light loads on the legs. Still stupid. Ah well it's done now. I did 8km easy plus 6 strides, as per the program.
Then a relaxing day, heaps of sleep, and today (Sunday) a 75 minute 15km easy run as level as I could manage it around here. Then a massage and spent the rest of the day trying to keep off my feet and munching on carbs. Hopefully I haven't scuttled my tapering plans- I've still got a full week to rest the legs and they're feeling pretty good today, as are the knees.
Damn that inspirational Tour!
