APEC quietness and more flats

You wouldn't bloody believe it, another flat!

I thought I was so smart finding that I actually had two brand new puncture-resistant road bike tyres just sitting in my closet (lucky door prizes from races last season) and putting them onto the bike last night. There's no way I'll get any more punctures now! And 20 minutes later I ran over a big hunk of broken bottle glass on Oxford St and PFFFFFFFFFT! there goes the front tube again...

It was the second session of the new season of the Balmoral Triathlon Club brick (bike and run) training in Centennial Park (I missed last week because of the Blackheath ride and the Striders race). It was drizzling intermittently and I decided for the first time to ride into the park instead of drive like I did all last season. I feel like I'm much fitter on the bike this year so I can stand to do an extra 10km each way and extend the workout.

Anyway 5 mins away and right on time I got the flat, but thankfully I had changed my spare tube and after all the flats the day before, I was damn fast at changing a tyre! Well for me anyway. I did it in 5 mins and made it to Centennial in time to start the session easily.

Only 8 people showed up, probably because of the rain, and we did an hour on the bike - one flat lap and two hilly laps, repeated. The hilly laps contained two climbs, one out of the saddle and one in the saddle. Then finished off with a 25 minute run over the hilly course. It was a great workout and I was very happy to be able to keep in touch with the top guys in the group (which is a huge thing for me, last season I was struggling to keep up with the slowest riders).

Went back home via the APEC protest at Town Hall where I hung out with Sarah and Niamh for a while before they joined the crowd and I cycled on. It was amazing riding through the completely empty streets - police road blocks everywhere, no cars at all and very few people either. The cops waved me through all the roadblocks and it was a trip riding around through the yawning skyscraper canyons in the heart of Sydney which were eerily silent like I was in some post-apocalyptic movie!

Had a much needed nap when I got home (snuggling with the kitties) and then went out for an afternoon swim of 3.7km at North Sydney pool which was fantastic as there was nobody at all in my lane. A very good days workout.
