Hickson road & the dropback

Still a bit buggered today. Probably not suprising, after feeling a bit overtrained on Wednesday I had planned to do an easy ride with Andrew and Mark Thursday morning, but slept right through my alarm and barely made it to work on time! I must have needed it.

Of course then I felt guilty for not having done any decent running and there would be no track session after work because I was going out for Thanksgiving dinner at Mia and Dan's place. Therefore I joined the fast boys for 5x 1km reps along Hickson Road.

I’ve never done the Thursday session before, even though I’ve been receiving the emails for about 6 months! At first it didn’t fit in my marathon training plan (too much fast stuff), then I took some time off hard running training afterwards, then the Balmoral track sessions started up on a Thursday night so I got back into them.

Anyway yesterday the time had come so I jogged down to Walsh Bay and did the session. Damn those guys are quick, such great runners. Again, it’s certainly worth training with the best – no better way to get motivated and push yourself. I managed to push 4 of the reps pretty hard, then just used the last one as a cruise. I’m not used to longer reps and I didn’t want to overdo it too badly because of the triathlon on Sunday. It was overcast and incredibly humid so I was sweating like a pig – can’t wait until they finally fix the showers at work. These sponge baths in the bathroom sink just don’t cut it...

This morning was a struggle getting out of bed, and I actually turned off my alarm before it went off, but I fired up and thought 3 sleep-ins in a week is just LAZY! So I got up and went to yoga, which was a sweaty stretchy very enjoyable session AND I managed to do a full drop-back by myself! That’s where you go from a standing position, arms over your head and arch your back until your hands are flat on the ground, then back up to standing. Like so:

I only barely did it unassisted, but it’s a pretty cool breakthrough for me which I’m excited about.

Now I’m considering whether to go for a swim right now or not at lunchtime. Hmmmm.

This weekend the Newcastle Olympic distance triathlon - oooooo!
