Last night I was all set to go to the Balmoral tri club Brick session in Centennial Park this morning. Then Dan texted with the idea of a 3 1/2 hour bike ride so I was like, I'm in.
Oh by the way, yesterday I did NOTHING. It was nice. This morning I felt a million bucks when I woke up at 5.30 without an alarm. That's what a recovery day does for ya!
I filled a couple of water bottles, mate a banana and PB sandwich for the ride, threw on my bike gear and lubed the chain, then I was 1 minute from walking out the door when I thought - "Should I be doing this?"
I don't know why it happened at that moment, but I suddenly realised that I didn't know when I'd be able to fit a long run in this weekend. And as Canberra Marathon is my next target, and this weekend should be my longest run in the lead-up, it was pretty important. The only chance I would have may be Sunday night if I go late, but even then after a ride today and Kurnell tomorrow I probably wouldn't be able to hold form properly for a decent run Sunday night.
So I texted Dan and said I can't do the ride, sorry. Felt really bad for standing him up so late in the game, but I knew it was the right thing for my training. Changed quickly into running gear, filled my fuel belt bottles and did my usual run to Clifton Gardens and beyond to Obelisk beach stairs and back.
The morning was glorious, I felt fantastic (although I resisted the urge to push too hard) and I managed an even 37km in 3:41. Just under 6min/km pace which is ok when you consider the amount of hills and stairs on the run. HR averaged 133.
Plus I was feeling so good at the end that when a girl overtook me on the Lavender Bay boardwalk I sped up and took her right back, running 4:15 pace for about 500m, then I threw in another couple of quick downhill strides before finishing up.
Got to post the Canberra marathon entry form on Monday. I was worried about whether I'd be ready to bounce back so soon after Huskisson, so I wanted to make sure I was able to get a few long runs in before committing. Now I've got through 5 runs over 3hrs (all over 30kms) and still have 2 more to go. I'm feeling ready. It's on!
