Sun safety

I had earned an RDO with my billings for last month, so on Monday I decided to take a day off.

I had booked in a skin cancer check up at Balgowlah Skin Cancer Clinic – they told me they are always fully booked 6 weeks in advance when I called on Friday, but I said “No worries. Any cancellations for Monday?” Why yes, 8:45am Monday! Sarah takes the car to work, so I did a swift trip to Balgowlah on the bike (saw Tom running to work in Seaforth) and got the all clear.

It is a bit of a worry however, since I spend a lot of time in the sun running and riding and have been pretty shocking lately in terms of sun safety. I rarely slip slop slap for my lunchtime runs and often on long bike rides I simply forget to apply sunscreen because I’m leaving while it’s pitch back! I need to get serious about this because I’m already looking grizzled enough at 32 and the last thing I need is to have chunks cut out of my face.

When we were in Port Douglas last month the owner of the apartments went to see the skin specialist the day after we arrived. She came back looking like Frankenstein’s monster with horrible ridged scars and stitches all over her face from a whole bunch of cancers being cut out, the poor woman. In fact that’s what made me get the check up!

Ok I’m making a mid-year resolution! Always wear sunscreen, sunnies and a hat for my lunchtime runs (I’ll have to bring all 3 into work and just leave them there). Also always carrying a little tube of sunscreen on bike rides, just slip it in the back of my jersey.

Finally, get a chapstick. I never thought of protecting my lips until the skin specialist showed me some photos of lip melanomas the other day – ewwwww!
