I've been feeling a bit under the weather the last couple of days. Nothing too bad, I've still got plenty of energy, just a scratchy throat and a general feeling of "I could be coming down with something..."
I got up to go for a ride at 5am yesterday, but with that feeling and how freezing it was, I thought a better idea would be to crawl back into my warm bed...
My legs were still tender from the SMH half on Sunday, but I had run to work and back on Monday and into work on Tuesday and felt pretty good, so I was definitely going down to HuRTS. Although the idea of 14 x 3mins seemed a little excessive!
It was a surprisingly large turnout considering the race only two days ago and I had to decide whether to take it easy and go for all 14 reps or go hard and just do a few. I decided that I needed to get back to the office, so better to go harder and drop off when I was done.
I lollygagged the first rep, ran back to return a scarf to some people who I thought had dropped it, then just jogged along chatting with Steve who’s only just starting to feel better from the long cold he’d had. Picked it up a bit the second rep, then on the third I noticed that all the fast boys were taking it real easy, so if I hammered it I could actually keep up with the back of the pack! This was gold, one of the first times I was able to stay in the same postcode as the rest of the bunch.
Managed to keep up for about 3 reps, then for the next few I went hard on the way out and kept with them, then eased up going back and let them get way ahead. Getting to 8 reps I thought I was close to being done but decided to go a couple more. 9 was fine, but then 10 was cactus – I was absolutely done. About halfway round I couldn’t even go remotely fast and the rest of the group were over the horizon, so I made a sharp left away from Farm Cove and headed back to work, utterly spent. Feels good to ruin yourself every now and then!
PS: Good job Greg on the SMH! Even with patchy training because of the lingering flu, and a dodgy foot. How's it feeling now? Even before you left your comment I've been on the same page because I was really picking up the pace yesterday. Of course it helps that everyone else was running super slow (for them) because once I had a sniff of being able to keep up, I was off!
Here are the splits, you can see the ones I was trying to keep up with the pack (3,5,7,9)
Rep --HR av -- HR mx
1 -- 143 --151
2 -- 149 -- 166
3 -- 162 -- 176
4 -- 164 -- 178
5 -- 168 -- 183
6 -- 167 -- 178
7 -- 170 -- 182
8 -- 169 --179
9 -- 170 --181
