Very interesting day today, HuRTS was 7x Gate to Gate around Farm Cove (which is apparently about 909m I’m told)
I was feeling good for it, I guess because I’ve done bugger-all exercise this week so I’m pretty fresh. I pushed slightly the first couple of reps and did them in 3mins, but I didn’t feel like I was going all out or anything like that.
Then on the fourth rep I was struggling to catch my breath. Funny, I didn’t feel like I was going that fast, my legs definitely had more speed left in them and my lungs weren’t burning, it was just like I was having (what I’d imagine to be) an asthmatic breathing experience where I couldn’t seem to suck in enough air.
I glanced at my watch and noticed my HR was creeping up into the 180s. My HR didn’t feel high though, and my legs didn’t feel anywhere near lactic. It was just the breathing that was noticeable. I slowed slightly to bring things back into control, which was disappointing, but I only lost a few seconds.
The same thing happened on the next two reps as well, about halfway round the breathing was just a little difficult to do and I had to slow a little again. On the final (7th) rep I actually decided to pull the plug after 1 minute because it just didn’t feel right.
Why? Maybe I went out too hard at the start? Then once my HR had got that high the first time, it was too easy for it to get back up there again. Maybe I was just having a high heart rate day (I’ve heard it can happen). Maybe my legs were so fresh from the reduced volume of training that my heart & lungs couldn’t cope with how fast my legs wanted to go? Or maybe because I’ve been doing a lot less aerobic running and bike riding, so my aerobic capacity has gone down. Does anyone have any ideas or have had this happen before?
Normally it’s the other way round, at the end of a race my HR and breathing is fine and I actually can’t make my legs go any faster!
Hey I just remembered I've had this happen once before, the first timeI did the Minimosmarathon when I thought the end was the same point as the start, so I seriously hauled us up that final long hill... only to find there was another 200m up the hill, then down around the two more corners etc etc. By the top of that hill I could barely suck in breath. Hmmmm.

Is this just an excuse to stop from going hard on the weekend?
Seriously though - sounds like you may be coming down with something, just watch it though could also be a sign your body is getting tired. Let's go for the former and not the latter, either way a good nights sleep will do the trick
Mate, I think it's a good sign. Those are great times for that session (3:00 equates to 3:20 per km). Running 3:45's will feel like a doddle on Saturday. I reckon you'll dip under 37 if you go for it.
No excuses Shadow, and I really don't think it's a sickness thing. Definitely not overtraining - I'm undertrained if anything, I've had the laziest last 6 weeks since Canberra marathon). Still trying to work out what it could be, but I'll stick with Tom's positive thoughts and gun it on Saturday. I think those are better times that I've done before so I'm hoping it's a sign of a breakthrough!
You're right Mike - good attitude, and Tom is super right, those times are awesome for G2G. Just promise one thing - wave to me as you exit the loop at the top of North Head!
Have you considered changing the battery in your HRM? eading over a few of your other posts you have had HRs at both ends of the range.
See you out there
I've just been thinking that Shadow, but it's an old HR strap that is a moulded one-piece which doesn't seem to have the capacity to open up! I might have to just stump up for a new one.
See you tomorrow!
