Sick Boy and the comeback

Oh it’s been a rough couple of weeks. Two weeks ago I had a sore throat and didn’t feel 100% and thought “Uh oh, I’m fighting a flu. Hopefully I can kick it.”

But it wasn’t to be. Wednesday two weeks ago I succumbed, with a painful throat, raging fever and a body that just wouldn’t move. Plus I couldn’t talk without coughing like crazy. Nightmare. I spent the next four days lying on the couch feeling like crap and unable to speak or really move. I went to the doctor for the first time in 3 and a half years and got some antibiotics and after a few days they kicked in.

Unfortunately it meant that I missed the Sydney to the Gong bike ride on Sunday which I’d booked in for and was really looking forward to riding there and back. We had a good crew this year and the boys did about 190km total in perfect weather. Ah well.

I was back at work Monday last week but still feeling tired and wiped out so slept in all week and did no exertion (apart from riding to work and back).

Finally last weekend I had a bit more energy and was going crazy having not exercised in so long, so I went out for a nice 110km ride with some mates up to Akuna Bay and then did three laps of the 5km hill there, really pushing hard each time. It was a great session and it really thrashed my legs, the new bike performed very well too.

Sunday I wanted to get more riding in (the usual thing – missed two weeks of training, got to cram as many kms in as possible! Totally reckless). Dan was supposed to come but he had an ear infection overnight, so I headed off by myself on very ginger legs and soft pedalled out to West Head and back to Manly to help Mum and Dad set up their new video. What are sons for if not for that? Got 95km in although I wasn’t setting any speed records, but it was perfect weather and just nice to be out there. I like the odd longer session by myself, it reminds me of what it’s like riding in a triathlon.

So I decided to fire back into the training regime this week. Had a swim at lunchtime yesterday and it felt terrific, then did Boundary Riders this morning which also felt amazing. I want to try to get a work week which consists of:

3 x morning rides with the Boundary Riders (Tues / Thurs / Fri) for 120km
2 x morning yoga sessions (Mon / Wed)
2 x lunchtime swim sessions

Then a couple of longer rides on the weekend and I’m all set. Well until I can run again anyway…

Yeah all this riding and swimming, what's it leading to? You could always relay something like the Cronulla Tri, and what is with the teasers about you running again? What is the progress looking like?
