Back on the airwaves

Yes I haven't posted for a while. Yes I've been horribly injured and unable to run. Yesterday was the Sydney marathon. My biggest goal for the year was to break 3 hours in that race. I booked into it months ago and trained my little heart out. I was absolutely on fire with the training and posting faster and faster times. I also set out a list of other cool looking races to enter on either side of the marathon and then a bunch of triathlons in October / November / December.

Yesterday came. And there was I, sitting on the sidelines with a stress fracture of the pelvis. Haven't run a step since late July and unable to even attempt running until December. So that explains why the old blog hasn't been updated for a while.

Actually that's all just for dramatic effect. Yes I was upset when I injured myself, even more so when it wasn't healing and I couldn't find anyone to tell me what was wrong.

But I got a proper diagnosis by a great sports doctor (Dr Tom Cross in Crows Nest if you're wondering) and am seeing a really good physio who was the NSW elite road cycling champion in 2007 and before that a NZ representative runner so knows his stuff. Once I got some certainty that I wasn't allowed to start running until December I came to terms with it pretty quickly and looked at it as a great opportunity to work on my cycling.

I can honestly say I don't feel bad about my injury, in fact it's great every now and then to have something shake you up enough to realise that your plans for the world don't always accord with reality. And when that happens you have a choice. You can bitch and moan and feel pained that the world isn't playing along with your mental model of how it should be. Or you can try to cultivate flexibility of mind and just go with reality.

The only thing that upsets me even remotely about my current state is that I haven't been able to run with my buddies Andrew, Kathryn, Chris and Mark and train for the marathon and run with them. Sounds like they all went awesome - Kathryn thrashed it coming in at 3:09 and 6th woman home and apparently felt fine at the end, even sprinted the last 2 kms! I'm so happy for all those guys and looking forward to running with them again. I also miss running with the HuRTS squad on Tuesday and Thursday, those were the highlights of my week. And I can't go onto the Coolrunning website anymore, it's just too hard to read about other people running!

On the plus side however, I managed over 350 kms riding last week (probably closer to 380) which is WAY more than I've ever done before and it felt really really good. And I'm going to start blogging again... I've got things to say baby!

Honestly the reason for not blogging wasn't me moping around, I've just been crazy busy with this new job and my riding plus life in general. To be continued...

Good to hear from yoy mike, I was beginning to worry. You are going to be unstoppable on the bike soon. A few months of bike k's in the legs will set you up for a really good ironman in the future. Hopefully see you round when I get back on two wheels.
